A Grain-Shipping Village with Farm Buildings Around It

Spray Foam Insulation in Firth covers a small village and a lot of farm buildings. Firth is the southernmost community in Lancaster County, with Big Nemaha Reservoir along its east side. The 2010 census counted 218 housing units in the village and 590 residents; by 2020 the population was 649.

The railroad years

Firth was settled in the early 1870s after the Atchison & Nebraska Railroad was extended toward Lincoln. Its post office opened in 1872, named for railroad superintendent Frank Firth, and the village incorporated in 1879. Once the line was done, Firth became a shipping point for grain and livestock. Houses from that era and the decades after tend to have hollow walls, minimal attic insulation and stone or block foundations.

Farm shops and pole barns

Around Firth, the more common call is for outbuildings. Machine sheds, shops and pole barns made of steel sweat on cold nights when warm air inside hits the roof panels. Closed-cell spray foam bonded to the steel stops that, and a thicker layer turns a shop into a space you can heat. We size the foam to how the building is used.

Older farmhouses

A farmhouse that has been added onto over the years often has several roof lines and attic spaces, some reachable and some not. We look at each one. The plan usually combines blown-in insulation where there is an open attic floor, foam in tight spaces and kneewalls, and dense-pack in hollow walls.

Code and timing

Nebraska's statewide 2018 IECC lists R-49 for ceilings and R-19 cavity or R-15 continuous for basement walls in new work. For outbuildings, the target is set by how you use the building. Shops and barns are easiest to spray before they are full of equipment.

Firth Questions

Can you insulate a machine shed near Firth?

Yes. Closed-cell foam on the roof steel and walls stops condensation and dripping. If you plan to heat the building, we quote a thicker layer.

My farmhouse has several attic spaces. Can they all be insulated?

Usually. We look at each one. Open attics get blown-in, tight spaces and kneewalls get foam, and areas with no access get a plan to open them up.

Do you work outside the village limits?

Yes. Farms and acreages around Firth are a regular part of our work.
