A Railroad Village Turned Commuter Town

Spray Foam Insulation in Hickman serves one of the fastest-growing towns in Lancaster County. Hickman's population grew 52.9% from 2000 to 2010 and another 57.3% from 2010 to 2020, reaching 2,607. In 2010 the town had 609 housing units; the 2020 census showed only 5.9% of homes vacant. Most of that growth is newer houses, many with full basements.

Where it started

Reverend C. H. Heckman founded the town, and he and Samuel Egger platted it in 1872 after a station was approved on the Atchison and Nebraska Railroad route between Rulo and Lincoln. The plat was recorded as Hickman, the spelling that stuck, and the town incorporated in 1885. A small number of older homes near the original town remain, and those often need wall and attic work.

Newer homes: the bottom and the top

In a newer Hickman house the biggest leaks are usually at the bottom and the top. At the bottom, the rim joist above the basement wall is often covered only with a loose batt. Closed-cell foam seals it and makes the floors above noticeably warmer. At the top, attic insulation can be thin or uneven near the eaves, and penetrations for lights and vents may not have been sealed well. A blower door test shows where the house is leaking.

Code baseline

Nebraska's 2018 IECC applies statewide and lists R-49 for ceilings, R-20 or R-13 plus R-5 continuous for walls and a blower door result of 3 ACH50 or less for new homes. Those are good targets for any additions or basement finishes in Hickman.

Acreages nearby

The country around Hickman holds acreages with shops and outbuildings. Steel buildings that drip in winter are a common call; closed-cell foam on the underside of the steel keeps warm, moist air off the cold metal.

Hickman Questions

My Hickman house is newer. Does it need more insulation?

Maybe not everywhere. We usually find the rim joist and one or two attic areas are the weak spots in newer homes. Fixing those is often enough.

Can you insulate my shop outside Hickman?

Yes. We insulate shops and pole barns on acreages around Hickman, usually with closed-cell foam to stop condensation on the steel.

What does a blower door test show?

It depressurizes the house and measures how fast air leaks in, then lets us find the leaks. Nebraska's code requires new homes to reach 3 ACH50 or less.
