When Old Insulation Has to Go
Insulation removal and replacement is for the times when adding more on top is the wrong move. Most clean, dry insulation can stay where it is. But insulation that has been soaked by a roof leak, soiled by mice or squirrels, smoke-damaged, or packed down to a fraction of its depth needs to come out. So does insulation that sits on top of an attic floor full of air leaks, when the only way to seal them properly is to clear the space first.
Storm damage
Lincoln sees serious storms: Wikipedia's city article notes an EF2 tornado in western Lincoln on May 5, 2019, an EF3 in northeast Lincoln on April 26, 2024, and says severe hail and wind have become more common. A roof that leaked before it was repaired can leave wet, matted insulation behind. That insulation stops working and can hold moisture against the ceiling drywall and framing. After a roof repair, it is worth a look in the attic.
How removal works
For loose fill, we run a large vacuum hose from a truck-mounted or portable unit into the attic and pull the material out into bags or a collection container, which keeps the dust out of the house. Batts are bagged by hand. Spray foam is cut and scraped off, which is slower and costs more. Once the attic or wall is clear, we clean up, seal the bypasses and repair any damaged vent chutes before reinsulating.
Vermiculite and other concerns
Vermiculite, a pebbly grey-brown or gold loose fill found in some older houses, may contain asbestos. We do not disturb it. If we see it, we stop and recommend testing, and any removal is done by a licensed abatement contractor before we come back to seal and insulate.
What goes back in
After removal, the space is a blank slate. Most attics get air sealing and blown-in cellulose or fiberglass to R-49, Nebraska's code figure for ceilings. Some get roof deck foam instead. If your home is in LES's service territory and the attic was at R-19 or less before the work, ask us about the 2026 incentive rules before the old insulation comes out.

How a Removal Job Goes
1. Inspect and test
Find out what is up there, why it failed and whether vermiculite needs testing.
2. Contain
Protect the path from the attic to the door and set up the vacuum line.
3. Remove and clean
Vacuum or bag the old material and clean the attic floor.
4. Seal and reinsulate
Close the leaks, then install new insulation to the agreed R-value.

Why Choose Us for Insulation Removal & Replacement
We find the cause
Rodent entry or roof leaks get pointed out so the new insulation does not fail too.
Vermiculite left alone
We stop and recommend testing rather than disturbing it.
Insulation Removal & Replacement Questions
Do I need to remove old insulation before adding new?
Not usually. Clean, dry insulation can stay. Remove it if it is wet, moldy, soiled by animals, or if it has to come out to seal the attic floor properly.
How do I know if my insulation has rodent damage?
Look for tunnels, droppings, nesting material and a musty smell. Matted, flattened patches near the eaves are another sign.
Is removing insulation messy?
Vacuum removal keeps most of the dust contained. We protect the path through the house and clean up when we finish.
What if my attic has vermiculite?
Do not disturb it. Have it tested; if it contains asbestos, a licensed abatement contractor removes it. We can seal and insulate afterward.
