A Mill Town on the Blue

Spray Foam Insulation in Milford works on one of the area's oldest towns. Milford was platted in 1866 and named for a mill at a ford on the Big Blue River. It is in Seward County, and its Southeast Community College campus traces back to the Nebraska State Trade School, founded there in 1941. The 2020 census counted 829 housing units and 2,155 residents.

A settled housing stock

Milford's housing count barely moved between censuses: 843 units in 2010 and 829 in 2020. The homeowner vacancy rate in 2020 was just 1.7%. That means most homes here are older and owner-occupied, the kind of houses where insulation upgrades pay off over many years of ownership.

What we find in older Milford homes

Houses from Milford's earlier decades often have a few inches of insulation in the attic or none, and exterior walls with nothing in them. Foundations may be stone, brick or block. Our usual plan: seal the attic floor and blow insulation toward R-49, fill hollow walls with dense-pack cellulose and foam the rim and sill in the basement. On stone or brick foundations we check carefully for moisture before covering anything.

Near the river

Homes near the Big Blue can deal with damp basements. Spray foam is not a fix for water coming in. If we see signs of water, we will tell you to address that first, then insulate.

Shops and newer homes

Newer houses on the edges of town and acreages around Milford call us for rim joists, bonus rooms and steel shops. Closed-cell foam on steel stops condensation and makes a shop easy to heat.

Milford Questions

My Milford house has a stone foundation. What can be insulated?

The rim joist and sill above it usually can, with closed-cell foam. Stone walls themselves need a moisture check first, since they can pass water.

Is it worth insulating a house I plan to stay in for years?

That is when insulation and air sealing make the most sense, because the savings and comfort add up over every winter and summer you stay.

Do you insulate shops near Milford?

Yes. Pole barns and steel shops are common jobs on acreages around town.
